Born in Nancy in 1978, Johann Vexo studied with Christophe Mantoux at the Conservatoire de Strasbourg, where he was awarded first prize in organ. He continued his studies at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris with Michel Bouvard and Olivier Latry for organ, and with Thierry Escaich and Philippe Lefebvre for improvisation. He received several awards, including first prize in organ, first prize in basso continuo, and prizes in harmony and counterpoint.
Appointed through a competition at the age of 25, Johann Vexo became the choir organist at Notre-Dame de Paris. He is now the titular organist of the great Cavaillé-Coll organ at the Cathedral of Nancy and a professor of organ at the Conservatoire and the Académie Supérieure de Musique in Strasbourg.
A guest at many international festivals, Johann Vexo performs concerts in Europe, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Russia. As a soloist or with an orchestra, he has performed in Atlanta, Auckland, Chicago, Geneva, Los Angeles, Montreal, Munich, New York, Saint Petersburg, San Francisco, Sydney, and Vienna, at venues such as Westminster Abbey in London, the Wanamaker Grand Court in Philadelphia, the Basilica of the National Shrine in Washington, the Kultur und Kongresszentrum in Lucerne, Brisbane City Hall, the Moscow Conservatory, and the Metropolitan Cathedral in Mexico City.
In addition, Johann Vexo has been invited to teach organ masterclasses for the American Guild of Organists and at prestigious institutions (Rice University in Houston, McGill University in Montreal, University of Michigan, Folkwang University in Essen, Yale University, Haileybury College in Melbourne, Trinity University in San Antonio, International Organ Assemblies in Kaliningrad, and others). He has made several recordings on historical French instruments, including one for the JAV Recordings label on the great organ of Notre-Dame de Paris.
