Pascale Van Coppenolle

Born in Tokyo. Organ studies with Prof. Hubert Schoonbroodt at the Royal Conservatory of Liège; postgraduate studies in composition and theory pedagogy at the Cologne University of Music. Masterclasses with Isoir, Lagacé, Vogel, Tagliavini, and Darasse.

Concert activities in Europe, the USA, Brazil, and Japan. Innovative pedagogy in theoretical subjects with a specialization in Renaissance counterpoint. 1994 thesis: “The Use of the Organ in Contemporary Music.”

After a career in Belgium and Luxembourg, she took over the position of titular organist at the City Church (Stadtkirche) in Biel and as a senior lecturer for organ at the Bern University of the Arts in August 2007. Since 2018, she has also been an organ teacher at the Biel Music School.

At the end of 2023, she retired from the City Church in Biel, where over the years she developed creative and interdisciplinary activities involving visual artists and dance, including organ discovery sessions for children. As of June 2025, she is now also retired from her teaching positions.

Contributed to the realization of the new Metzler organ (2011), which—as a world premiere—features a fourth manual with dynamic wind, incorporating the research of her predecessor Daniel Glaus.

Her repertoire spans six centuries of organ music, and she also dedicates herself to free improvisation with other musicians and electronics.

Concerts with soloists and ensembles such as Christophe Deslignes, Peregrina, Dragma, Syntagma, Arcomelos, Marc Mangen (Jazz), Oni Wytars, Chant 1450, Flores harmonici, William Dongois, and others.

Currently, the performance Orgel voraus! (Organ Ahead!), supported by the cultural promotion of the Canton of Bern and featuring narrator Anne Bernasconi, offers children the opportunity to discover the organ.

Pascale Van Coppenolle has recorded for radio, TV, and various labels. Her CD recordings, particularly those featuring the historical organ heritage of Luxembourg, have been widely acclaimed in the international press. She has published studies in specialist journals such as Organ Kenkyu (Japan).

Her double CD “Dynamisch” presents both organs of the Biel City Church. CD1, titled “From Hexachord to Chromaticism,” features works by Scheidt, Byrd, Frescobaldi, Bull, Sweelinck, Bach, and Liszt. CD2 consists of free wind-dynamic improvisations, performed solo and in duo with Hans Koch (bass clarinet), Jonas Kocher (accordion), Hannah E. Hänni (voice), and Luke Wilkins (violin).
